Chemical Dependency Services

Rogers Memorial Hospital provides intensive, structured chemical dependency treatment services for adults in all stages of addiction. We offer a range of treatment options not often found in other settings.

Led by Michael M. Miller, MD, FASAM, FAPA, and Jay Kasner, MD, board-certified physicians who specialize in addiction medicine, our experienced treatment team of chemical dependency professionals use evidence-based therapies to help patients achieve abstinence and practice principles of recovery.

Our treatment approach uses components of 12-step programming to educate patients about addictive illness and facilitate the recovery process.

We invite patients, families and referring treatment team members to contribute to developing the individual's treatment plan. Family members are an important part of our treatment approach.

Prior to admission, prospective patients complete a free screening that is reviewed by the program's attending physician to determine what level of care will meet the needs of each individual.

Levels of care:

There are three levels of chemical dependency services offered at Rogers Memorial Hospital.

Residential Treatment

The Herrington Recovery Center provides intensive treatment for adults who are medically stable, but have been unable to achieve recovery in a short-term or low-intensity treatment program. A comprehensive five-day evaluation is available for professionals referred by licensing boards, regulatory agencies and other privileging organizations.

The center's new "green" facility is built to meet certification for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. The natural surrounding and comfortable settings blend together, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere.

Day Treatment

Day provides support, education, medical monitoring and accountability during the hours of the day identified as most troublesome for patients. The option of attending either a day or evening/weekend shedule is available for patients, allowing them to maintain work, family or school commitments.

Detoxification Services

Short-term inpatient detoxification and stabilization services are specifically designed to meet the medical issues associated with withdrawal from alcohol or other drugs. Inpatient treatment also may be necessary for individuals with co-existing mental health concerns. Individuals unique needs and situations impact their length of stay.

Treatment Approach:

Components of 12-step programming provide the framework to educate patients about addictive illness and begin the recovery process.

  • Establish Abstinence and Engage in Recovery: The first step toward sobriety is recognizing the power of addiction and the “unmanageability” it leads to.
  • Build on Abstinence and Focus on Growth: Abstinence is only the beginning of complete recovery. Recovery also requires learning how to replace self-destructive patterns with healthier thoughts and behaviors. Through individual and group sessions, patients learn to identify strengths and enhance coping skills. We encourage patients to practice principles of recovery that will foster social, mental, emotional, physical and spiritual growth.
  • Involve and Educate Patients and Families: We educate patients and families on the nature of addiction, the recovery process, relapse prevention, craving and support resources. All patients are encouraged to have their families attend family-focused treatment sessions. Family members are provided opportunities to learn about the addiction process and how to support someone in recovery.
  • Prevent Relapse: As patients continue their recovery, they will encounter obstacles that can trigger relapse. We help patients learn to identify relapse warning signs and establish effective coping strategies.

Treatment Team:

Our clinical staff is led by board-certified addictionologists, who are physicians specializing in addiction medicine.

Michael M. Miller, MD, FASAM, FAPA, is the medical director of The Herrington Recovery Center, and Jay Kasner, MD, is the medical director of chemical dependency services at Rogers Memorial Hospital-Milwaukee and the attending physician for The Herrington Recovery Center.

Other members of each program's treatment team may include: a psychiatrist, certified clinical supervisor, registered nurse, master's-level certified substance abuse counselors, registered dietitian, master's-level clinical and experiential therapists, and residential counselors.

Upon admission, patients meet individually with members of the treatment team. The treatment team completes a comprehensive evaluation and develops a personalized plan. During treatment, patients participate in a weekly session with the physician as well as group-based therapies facilitated by other members of the treatment team.

With patient consent, our staff provides ongoing written and/or oral progress reports and coordinates continuing care with the patient's outpatient therapist and primary care provider.
