Rogers Memorial Hospital offers supportive spiritual care resources developed specifically to assess and address the spiritual needs of our patients. A core principle of our approach to spiritual care services is to respect and support the unique and individualized faith traditions of our patients to assist them in their recovery.
The following spiritual care resources are available in most treatment programs, depending on the patient's treatment goals and medical status:
Patients are able to request one-on-one sessions with a member of the spiritual care team, preceded by a spiritual assessment which identifies the patient's spiritual background, resource requests and topics they may wish to discuss from a faith-based perspective.
Each member of the spiritual care team has advanced training, preparing them to use an inclusive approach in meeting patients where they are on their spiritual path. In addition to providing on-site chaplain services, the team also serves as a resource for family members and hospital staff.
Our spiritual care resources help break through some of challenges of recovery that may have spiritual roots. These stories illustrate some common thought patterns for patients.
Kathryn was ashamed of her past and believed that her eating disorder was punishment for being a bad person. She discovered many positive things about herself on her journey toward forgiveness, and was finally able to stop her destructive behavior when she forgave herself. Jonathon felt that he could never be good enough for anyone to love him. He learned that he was worthy of love and could release his self-imposed perfectionist expectations without fear of abandonment. Michelle truly didn't know why she was ever born and felt like a complete failure. Through prayer and meditation, she began to focus on the bigger picture and find hope, purpose and meaning in her life again. Ryan shut down after the death of a close family member. he wanted to know "How could God allow things like this to happen?" During treatment he was able to acknowledge his grief and learn to accept that he may never have all the answers. Soon after treatment he reconnected with his faith community.
