Body Dysmorphic Disorder Medications

Common body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) medications that may be used in treatment include anti-depressants such as: Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), Paxil (paroxetine), Luvox (fluvoxamine), and Anafranil (clomipramine). These medications have all been found to be helpful in treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and are believed to be helpful in those suffering from body dysmorphic disorder. This class of medications are called serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs), or selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which increase the availability of seratonin, a chemical messenger in the brain. The effects of these body dysmorphic disorder medications is gradual and can take 2 weeks or more before any benefit is realized. The full benefit of body dysmorphic medications can take 4 months or more.

Body dysmorphic disorder medications should be administered by a physician following a thorough assessment.

For an initial needs assessment or a referral to a treatment provider in your area, contact Rogers Memorial Hospital at 1-800-767-4411. To learn more about about body dysmorphic disorder, please visit our body dysmorphic disorder page.
